A London bus, but much more useful. Vilac’s Pop-Up Bus is a cheerful wooden activity toy with a cast of animal passengers up top, each one ready to be pushed down and spring back into view with the sort of bounce that small children never seem to tire of.
It has that very good early-years combination of simplicity and payoff: press, pop, repeat. The action is easy to understand, satisfying to do and just surprising enough to keep it funny long after you would expect the joke to wear thin. Alongside the obvious entertainment value, it helps build hand-eye coordination, dexterity and fine motor skills through repeated play, while gently introducing cause and effect.
The design is especially lovely here. Bright without being garish, with Vilac’s usual graphic charm and a row of excellent little faces peering out from the bus windows, it feels playful in a properly considered way. Made from handcrafted wood and suitable from 18 months+, it is a strong one for toddlers who like movement, noise-free interaction and toys that do something every time they touch them.
