This could quite happily sit on a shelf as an object in its own right. Brigitte Tanaka has taken the instantly recognisable blue and white decoration of traditional Delftware and turned the vase itself into a beautifully embroidered organza pouch.
The whole thing is worked in shades of porcelain blue, from the decorative borders to the tiny pastoral scene at its centre, complete with windmill, water and landscape. The sheer organza works particularly well here, giving it that milky translucence of porcelain while keeping the embroidery incredibly detailed.
Rather brilliantly, the shape isn't just for show. Untie the pale blue ribbon around the neck and the vase opens into a little pouch, ready for jewellery, keepsakes or anything else worth hiding inside something this pretty.
Part accessory, part textile objet – and a very good present for anyone with a weakness for Delft, ceramics or beautifully strange little things.
