Cedar is the one for anyone who wants their incense woody and fresh rather than sweet. It has the smell of freshly cut cedar and that clean, green quality of a conifer forest — warm, but without becoming heavy. HA KO describes the fragrance as spreading like watercolour through a forest, which is rather lovely and actually gives you a pretty good idea of it.

The incense itself is made from Japanese washi paper, cut into a delicate leaf shape. You don’t even have to burn it: left as it is, a single leaf will gently fragrance a small space for up to three months. When burned, it smoulders for around five to seven minutes.

Light the tip, blow out the flame and place the smouldering leaf on a HA KO felt burner mat (sold separately), on a flat, non-flammable surface. Never leave it burning unattended and keep it away from draughts and anything flammable.

Developed over five years in Awaji, Japan, it’s such a beautiful alternative to traditional stick incense — particularly if you like the ritual of incense as much as the fragrance itself.
