Deep chocolate brown meets cream, powder blue and black stripes, finished with a scalloped edge and the smallest little “merry Christmas” in gold. It’s festive, but only because it tells you it is — which makes a very nice change from cards covered in baubles, trees and people wearing Santa hats.

The colours are particularly good here. Rich and wintry without falling back on red and green, with the pale blue stripe giving the whole thing a slightly unexpected lift. The scalloped top adds just enough decoration without disturbing all that lovely simplicity.
